Good Health

Valuing People says...

  • People with learning disabilities get worse treatment from health services than other people
  • Black and Asian people with learning disabilities get even worse health support
  • Not many people with learning disabilities get health check-ups; even less people have checks for breast cancer and cervical cancer
  • Finding out about and treatment for heart disease, thyroid and bone problems are also not good enough
  • Too many people who have challenging behaviour are given medication, instead of looking at other ways of helping them.
  • Doctors and medical staff don't always see medical problems that people with a learning disability might have

What have we done so far?

Sue Chapman is leading on Good Health.

People who are part of the Good Health group are meeting with Nurses at the John Radcliffe Hospital to talk about how people could be better supported when they are in hospital.

Jill Turner is talking with Kathleen Munby about making it easier for people coming into the John Radcliffe Hospital. Jill has made a Grab Sheet with all the information the hospital needs on it. She has asked people what they think.

She is also talking with the hospital about how to support staff and families when they are helping people when they come into hospital.

We are visiting and listening to people from all over the South-East of England to hear about good things happening in other places. Jackie Roberts is our link to the Health Action Network.

We have written a Good Health Plan.

Here is the easy words version. Here is the long version.
